WW II veteran combat medic’s story – 2 Years and 2 Days of Miracles
“Duke” Dunnewin’s story.
I was at boats on the lake today and started talking to someone I had not known before who lives in our park. He is 92 years old and lives here with his 87 year-old wife.
As we talked, I learned he has a son who is a filmmaker and he had a story to tell about WWll when he was a medic. This story is told on youtube by Duke and his son, the filmmaker.
While in Germany they came upon a wounded German soldier and they were going to give him medical help. Duke and the others went to help this wounded soldier and as they were moving him to a stretcher Duke noticed a wire attached to his body. They all knew it was a bomb and dove for cover. They all were wounded but lived, including the German soldier. He told them later his people had left him for dead and booby trapped him, knowing that the Americans would try to help.
Duke received a bronze star, not for this but for dragging men out of a burning tank. Also, for a brief time he was a prisoner of war. This is all in the video his son made. Over 9,000 people have viewed it so far.
After the war, Duke opened a dental lab in Southern California. He is an interesting man and he lives here in our park.
