Happy2Hours reminder

Sep 22, 2024

  • Hi everyone, it’s “Reminiscing Al” this time.

Another Happy2Hours is on its way this Saturday and we are celebrating all those special “Cafeteria Ladies” that served us in high school.

I remember one special cafeteria lady back when I was a 13-year-old freshman. There were at least three women who served our lunches daily. My special lady was the one in the middle of the line; she served the canned veggies (mostly yuk) and the protein (sometimes yay). You know, if I had my way, she would have been the dessert lady. The first cafeteria lady server set a small “non-chocolate milk” carton (yuk) on a  tray and then handed it to us as she loudly exclaimed,“NEXT, keep it moving people!” I can’t remember why the line lagged for her; those little cell phones to distract us weren’t even invented yet.

My special server always referred to me as “young man.” Can you imagine that! Up to that point in my life, I had always been addressed as “little boy!” The fact that I was still under five feet tall, that was a given I guess, but “young man” was so grown-up sounding, and I liked that. She had to know what it was like being so small in a high school setting. You know, she always had a smile for me and looked genuinely happy to serve us as well. It wasn’t long before she knew I was not a fan of canned veggies or fake mashed potatoes. Or more specifically, dinner for lunchtime, unless it was a cheesy French bread pizza! However, when the mashed potatoes were real, she always let me know and somehow the ice cream scooper delivered a much larger portion of real potatoes to my tray. You ought to have seen how she made my food tray looked once I shot up a foot in height the next year. Yeah, I loved my special cafeteria lady in high school, but not so much the dessert lady, somehow, I always ended up with non-jiggly Jell-o cubes as my dessert (drat!)

So, here we are decades later celebrating those wonderful ladies in the kitchen, especially our very own “Kitchen Magicians” this week. Come and celebrate our “Cafeteria Ladies” for yourselves, and perhaps you’ll be tempted to try one of our famous fruity Sangria Spritzers to complement their appetizers chosen for us.

We hope to see you on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. once again.

    Thanks,
    Al Fichera,
    Shenanigans Bar Manager.
