Preserving your garden

Feb 21, 2022

We have many freezing nights ahead and plants may need help to stay alive.
DRY IS DEAD! Even plants that are not frost tender may die from dehydration in very cold temperatures. Make sure everything is thoroughly watered, and it’s okay if the foliage gets wet.

BUT FIRST:
POTS: If possible, move them under a patio cover – and out of the wind.
Consider using a shed or garage.
Being in a pot makes almost any plant more frost tender.
Move first, then water, so they’re not too heavy.

COVER – BUT DON’T USE PLASTIC
Cover – and cover the actual pot to protect the roots.
Cover any frost tender landscape plants. (If in doubt, cover.)
New, young plants may need protection.

You can buy covers at the nursery and big box stores, or just use whatever you have; tablecloths, pillow slips, towels, beach towels, even sheets. Secure them so they don’t blow off, and just leave them on until the weather improves. You do not need to take them off during the day.

If you have the big, old fashioned Christmas tree lights that get hot, they are great to put under a cover on a larger plant.
